Genshin Impact Sets New Record with $4.1 Billion Revenue Growth, Updates, and Global Success

The open-world game “Genshin Impact,” a second-life title, has set a new revenue record.
According to data released by the application store analytics firm Sensor Tower, the mobile game developed by miHoYo, “Genshin Impact,” has now generated over $4.1 billion in total revenue, which is equivalent to over 28 billion RMB.
Looking back at “Genshin Impact’s” previous achievements, in 2021, the game became the highest-grossing game of its first year, and in 2022, its total revenue successfully ranked among the top three globally, only behind Tencent’s “Honor of Kings” and “PUBG Mobile.”
It is noteworthy that “Genshin Impact” has been in operation for over two years, yet it has maintained a relatively high revenue growth rate over such a long period in the global gaming market. Compared to similar games, what specific advantages does “Genshin Impact” possess?
Revenue Increases by Over $1 Billion in Eight Months
Sensor Tower’s data indicates that China remains the largest market for “Genshin Impact,” with income of about $1.4 billion, accounting for 34.6% of total revenue; Japan is the second-largest market, with $960 million, representing 23.2%. The United States and South Korea follow with 16.4% and 6.1% of revenue respectively, totaling $860 million and $250 million.
Indeed, in May 2022, the game’s total revenue approached $3 billion. Eight months later, the revenue has increased by another $1 billion, reaching $4.1 billion.
During these eight months, “Genshin Impact” has undergone six updates, from version 2.6 to 3.3. The 3.0 major version, “Dawn Brought by a Thousand Roses,” was launched on August 24, 2022. Following the 2.0 version’s “Ricefield” map, the game introduced the “Niru” continent, as well as new five-star characters such as Tinari, Naphar, and Nayeles.
According to Sensor Tower statistics, the global revenue of “Genshin Impact” on the first day of the 3.0 version’s release topped multiple country’s game charts, with iOS mobile revenue exceeding $12 million (approximately 82 million RMB), which is more than three times the second place of Cygames’ “Saber of Honor.”
In November 2022, the 3.2 version was launched, which opened up the “Grass God” Naphar and popular character Yawning Coyote’s character pool. According to data from the app analysis platform InMobi, within ten days of the 3.2 version’s release, daily revenue showed a steady increase, peaking on November 4th when daily iOS revenue reached approximately $6.3 million (approximately 43 million RMB).

Currently, on the TapTap gaming community, the game has an overall score of 8.7, with over 410,000 users rating it, of which 200,000 users gave it a five-star rating. In July, “Genshin Impact” released the “Genshin·Tevaotan Chapter” in-between episode PV “Winter Night Fool Play,” with a Bilibili play count exceeding 20.81 million and a YouTube play count of over 13.62 million.
In December, “Genshin Impact” won the “Voice of the Player” award at the TGA 2022, voted by players based on their preferences.
